Yesterday I started my weekend in the name of live, local jazz music, not bad! A start at the roof of Jazz Dock in the afternoon with Roman Pokorný Gitan Trio, Ondřej Kabrna – acc; Taras Vološčuk – b; Roman Pokorný – g; not bad! And an ending for the day at U Staré Paní with The Luboš Soukup Quartet, Jakub Švejnar – dr; Jaromír Honzák – b; Jiří Levíček – p; Luboš Soukup – sax; not bad!

If you have followed my blogs at all you’ll be aware that I think Jazz on The Roof is a guineas happening, no matter on or under the Roof, if not refresh your memory HERE! 
And the musicians that perform here belong to the very elite in Czech music. Yesterday afternoon Roman and his trio showed that all I said is true. We were on the roof, no super summer heat but warm enough. A relaxed, enjoyable, friendly atmosphere very much due the absolute high class music ringing out from the trio of the day. Roman, Taras and Ondřej know this game, there’s no need for pedals, extra effects, this is plug in and play. So very basic and so very good. No wonder the Rooftop was sold out! The perfect break for the afternoon, from here it was easy to start the weekend with a few extra energy spikes served by the Roman Pokorný Gitan Trio!

The Luboš Soukup Quartet
After spending the day in our beautiful city you find yourself below ground level, in a club that in many way’s takes you back several decades, with its also very special atmosphere, U Staré Paní (at the Old Lady’s). Not many of these places exist anymore and if you have any doubts about where you are, they disappear as soon as Luboš and his quartet start playing. With a step out of the traditional genere what is called jazz we are offered a brilliant session in what many would call crossover music. What it’s called is not important, what it sounds like is decisive, and this sounds so good! With a mixture of Luboš own very personal and binding compositions to some original arrangements of standards, it gives you just what you came for, and a little bit more! These top musicians know what they are doing, no doubt about it, skillful pros all four and still I must mention the very special connection that is to be found between Luboš and Jiří, just listening to these two makes it worth coming, this said without under value in any way the rest of the band. The perfect end to the day, Luboš Soukup Quartet!
