Mirka Novak & Kristina Barta @ U Staré Paní 7.5.2025
Last night at the U Staré Paní (Old Lady), two truly experienced and skillful artists Kristina Barta – p; Mirka Novak – voc; on stage got a nightmare start to their concert, a start one doesn’t wish anybody, and of course they had no blame to the whole occurrence whatsoever! These things happen every once and awhile, part of life and the human factor but… The way these two “Women in Jazz” handheld the situation was more than admirable and that’s not all. Murphy’s famous law knows that when it starts it normally has no ending and affects everything to come thereafter. But here both Kristina and Mirka showed the meaning of experienced and skillful. After a peculiar (an understatement) first set these two ladies came back and gave us two sets of what we had come for, and like the catastrophic start had never happened, and that ladies and gentlemen is what professionals are made of!
Duo of emotions
Like I already mentioned in the Hot Spots for May I’ve never seen Kristina and Mirka perform together, only separate, and that’s my mistake. These two ladies are both educated and experienced in their field, Kristina’s skills on the piano and as a composer is already widely known, as is Mirkas skills as a singer and also as a composer. They have both recorded, so we are not talking about talented musicians anymore, they are already established, and yet… The harmony between these two is something that they don’t teach you in school, there is no master degree for this, this is all about emotions, very much emotions. I guess they are both lucky to have found a soulmate, even though the truth is that we, the audience, are the lucky ones. With a mixture of originals and old standards, with very special arrangements, they engage the audience in a way that you can almost touch the sound waves.
