Prague trivia knowledge that will make you stand out.

If you belong to the minority that’s into cubism, go to the next article and forget about this, well you can always look at the pictures of course.  πŸ™‚ But if you’re a regular tourist that wants to stand out a little when you get home and harass your friends and neighbors with your holliday picture’s, this is for you. πŸ˜‰

This is a triviality that will make people look at you in a little different way, and maybe even look up to you a little? πŸ™‚  They will definitely be quiet for a while when you show them the pictures and tell them that this is the only cubist street lamp post in the whole world, and it’s located in Prague. And not on the outskirts of the city, but right in the middle of one of the busiest areas in the center, and it has been there for over a hundred years!  A knowledge that not even all the locals are aware of, let alone the everyday tourist.

Memorize a few important facts, like it was designed by Emil Kralíček in 1912, the foundation is made into a seat, an excellent place to rest your feet for a while. It’s made of reinforced concrete. Just to be on the safe side, the glass and the metal lamp on the top have been replaced by a copy and the original is stored in the National Gallery of Prague. One story goes that the location of the lamp was supposed to light up the dark corner where it’s located but…. The light from the lamp post illuminated the U Pinkasu beer house and many critical voices were raised due to the free advertising the light got to this establishment, thru or not, well… πŸ™‚

If you remember these facts and share them with your friends along with the photos  you will absolutely score a few extra points! πŸ™‚
