No, I don't write bad reviews... 😀
I get the same question constantly: “Why don’t you ever write anything negative about the gigs you attend?”
I’ve been answering this since the early 80s, and my stance hasn’t changed. Why should I? And no, I’m not trying to be “nice”—on the contrary!
It comes down to knowing how to use the web. If I’m curious about a band, I check the streaming services. If I like what I hear, I go. If not? You guessed it—I stay home. It doesn’t take a degree in brain surgery. I might even do something radical like talk to a friend face-to-face about a band if the internet isn’t enough. I know, speaking to humans sounds like “Dinosaur Age” stuff to the younger generation, but that’s how I was raised. Try to understand…

Silence isn't "nice."
Of course, my system isn’t perfect. Attending as many gigs as I do, I occasionally run into something that isn’t what I hoped for. And then what?
I stay dead quiet.
That actually makes me less than nice, because “all PR is good PR,” right? By saying nothing, I offer no oxygen. Unlike some “colleagues” in this business, I get zero satisfaction from putting people down—people who are pouring their body and soul into something that just didn’t click for me. If I didn’t “get it” while others did, maybe the problem is in my own mirror?
I’m aware this stance won’t win me many friends in the industry, but I can live with that. 😀
