Novák–Barta Quartet feat. Honzák & Simpson @ Jazz Dock 20.6.2025
The top of the Czech jazz musicians family is fairly small, they mingled together musically like a big sparrow community, everybody plays with everybody, different line ups are made all the time, and put down just as fast. This is not altogether bad, personally I think that it develops the individual’s technical skills, gives more flexibility in its playing, improvisation etc. This could actually be one of the reasons for the high level of skillful musicians found in the Republic? But every now and then you get the urge to yell STOP, this is good, please develop this a little time. That was the feeling I had after listening to a session with Novák–Barta Quartet, Mirka Novák – voc; Kristina Bárta – p; Jaromír Honzák – b; Jessie Simpson – dr.at the Jazz Dock yesterday. A quartet that actually was a quintet since most of the time they were joined by saxophonist Robert Forejtek, which itself was a brilliant move, he fitted into the line up like a fish to water.
New born
What we experienced yesterday was the birth of something new, this band has never before performed in this line up. A formation that gave us standards as well as their own compositions and was not afraid to step out of the box called jazz music. With a dynamic sound as well as original arrangements all held together by Mirka who was the leader of the pack
, this was something to take care of and not put down as an experimental experience, and this for a very simple reason, this was good, this was in fact very good, this of course being my and the Jazz Dock audiences subjective opinion.

I’m fully aware that the basis for yesterday’s brilliant performance lies very much in the unique co-operation between Mirka and Kristina, a duo that’s been working together successfully for quite some time now. But nothing wrong with that and when adding the three gentlemen to this composition it took the whole project to a totally different level. Mirka also told me that they only had time for a short practice session before the actual performance, which makes it even more impressive, and also defends my thought about developing this project at least for a little time more, please
. In other words, Do That Again!
