Without prejudice…

Ondřej Kabrna & Flying Accordion @ Jazz On The Roof, 30.8.2025

The accordion does not belong in jazz music. Me and a packed Jazz Dock on the Roof are very happy that Ondřej Kabrna & Flying Accordion, Ondřej Kabrna – acc; Jaroslav Šindler – g; Antonín Šturma – b. were more open minded than the expression and gave proof to the saying, it’s not what you do, but how you do it! 😀 The trios two sets yesterday afternoon were so gripping and skillful that I’m pretty sure nobody even gave a thought about the accordion being in the “wrong” place, on the contrary. Okay, I admit, with these three top musicians, probably anything you put in there hand would sound good.

Brilliant match...

A setlist that contained the obligatory standards where performed with arrangements that also was a step out of the ordinary, completed with a few not so normal tunes one is used to hear on a jazz concert, and trust me, it sounded absolutely great. Ondřej on whose initiative this orchestra was put together couldn’t have made a better choice with its members, they really are a brilliant match together. Ondřej himself who is so intensive in everything he does on stage, with his whole body taking part in every note has found the perfect contrast in maestro Šindler who most of the time lets his guitar speak for himself and not much to say after that, as you all know. Antonin on the bass completes these two opposites perfectly by standing back very much of the time letting his two colleagues have the stage, but every once and awhile steps out to the spotlight and shows us how good of a bass player he really is.
An altogether satisfying summer afternoon on the Roof with perfect weather and even better music, that I hope to hear some more of in the future… Thank you trio Ondřej Kabrna & Flying Accordion 🙏🙏🙏
