Luboš Soukup Q @ U malého Glena 15.2.2025
feat. Petr Zelenka
Last night At Little Glen’s, the place is packed, hardly even room for the waiter to do his job, seating had been reserved a long time ago, and the seats would stay occupied until the end of evening. The reason was to be found on the stage, something I hinted about last month (link to last month blog), this time performing under the name; Luboš Soukup Q feat. Petr Zelenka (Luboš Soukup – sax; Petr Zelenka – g; Tomáš ‘Kaštan’ Baroš b; Jesse Simpson dr.). Different band, different sound but the same top quality of the music. Luboš had successfully again managed to gather a setup that would without doubt get your attention for the whole night. All that said, I admit that Luboš with his skills on the saxofon will always get your attention when it starts to make a sound, I will not repeat myself so read my review from last month. When you have Jesse and Tomáš responsible for the rhythm section, well what can go wrong? Nothing, and it didn’t (I know, a cliché again but so true! 😀), the synergy these two have together belongs to the top of the republic. For me Petr on his guitar was a new and pleasant acquaintance. Petr is in no way being a newcomer in the Czech jazz world, only to me. He has among others a long history with Luboš, that you could clearly hear and feel. He also had a very special and personal tone on his approach to his guitar, something that makes him stand out a bit. Petr is also a good composer, which also was heard last night.
Two + two makes four...
It’s never easy to put four top individuals in the same place/stage and expect miracles to happen. In the sound of music, four individual wills = four strong wills, that’s why they belong to the top in their own field. But when these four form two pairs, it for sure doesn’t make things easier, on the contrary, but last night showed us that two and two really makes four. An overall great evening with four professionals being aware of their own skill, like they of course should, but also having the respect and giving space for their fellow colleagues. After a two set concert containing standards and their own compositions made me think when walking home from Little Glen that there are probably better ways to spend Saturday evening, I just couldn’t think of what that would be!
