Jana Koubková Quartet @ Jazz Dock 16.2.2025
Some of us are lucky enough to know the feeling after a concert/gig, when one is all smiles, you feel like you experienced something extra and unique. That’s the feeling I had last night after the Jana Koubková Quartet (Jana Koubková – vocals; Ondřej Kabrna – p; Vítek Švec – double bass; Jan Červenka – dr.), that is after their SOUNDCHECK! This absolutely astonishing lady took hold of her audience before the concert even started. With that little twinkle in the eye, the contagious laughter and small jokes, which I of course didn’t understand with my limited knowledge of the local language, but I didn’t need to because just feeling was enough, she had us eating out of her hand immediately. The performance that followed held the same standard. This lady, who’s a legend in the Czech music world as a singer , songwriter , composer, entertainer and often referred to as the queen of Czech jazz, held us in a tight and joyful grip for the whole evening with her stories, songs, music and her stage show. The positive feeling and vibration that we had last night I am sure will stay in our minds for a long time, this memory is for sure something to bring forward on a rainy day. 
The Band...
A lady of jazz deserves a band with the same quality and she had. I don’t know if it was the energy that radiated from Jana or just the skills of the band, because that is what they have, after all they are part of the very cream of Czech musicians. But we were served some great arrangements from known and not so known tunes, everything from Bob Dylan to Proggy and Bess, some great individual solos and unless you were totally blind and deaf you could sense the delight the band themself had on the stage. And in spite of all this, they were all in the shadow from the lady of the night, just like the rest of us! Prague’s got a new queen, her name is Jana Koubková, Long Live The Queen!
