Jaroslav Šindler Quartet @ Jazz Dock 10.1
There’s is no glamour when Jaroslav brings his quartet to the stage (Jaroslav Šindler (guitar), Jan Štolba (tenor sax), Vít Švec (double bass) and Pavel Plašil (drums)), they bring their instruments and equipment them self, there are no roadies to be found, no hang arounds or groupies either, which may be good considering the average age of the members in the band . And yet, when the music starts, the intensity and the feeling with which it is presented to us is fascinating. It takes you to a place totally somewhere else, all you have to do is to say “Thank You” and enjoy the show, and I did! (Somebody took care of the sound, in the old days he was called the mixer, today I think they call him sound engineer, but what is important and what I want to mention is, he did his work 10+, absolutely high class work, I’m sorry I don’t have his (it was a he) name. )
Yes, the band consists of four fully professional musicians that have been around the block a few times and they know their audience and how to care for it, nothing wrong with that, on the contrary. But I’ve seen this set up now a few times, and still it’s the same feeling every time and that’s what fascinates me, and at the same time it takes care of my appetite for good music, because that’s what this is. The almost two hour concert last night made no exceptions, and just to make something clear, there are multiple ways to perform the one and same tune…
Fjordy
I also have the greatest respect for the fact that ALL the songs presented last night were made by the band themself, no jazz standards in this reportuare. As much as I like the Old American Songbook, which those of you who come regularly to this site know , it’s always refreshing to hear something new, this is the small little bonus you get every once and awhile. For some reason I have the feeling that the musicians in this country are more productive with new tunes than what they are elsewhere, I might be wrong and I have absolutely no basis for this comment, it’s just a feeling I have. Yesterday’s two sets had the bands record Fjordy as a ground, a record I suggest you get in your collection if you don’t have it yet, it’s an example of good music in the genre they call jazz. And no, I’m not being paid to write this, just as usual it’s only my personal opinion. In the photos I tried to catch something of the intensity and feeling I experienced last night, I don’t know if I’m succeeded, if you think I did, then good, if you think I didn’t then come and have a look yourself next time these guys are on stage, it’s worth it I promise. And in the end, the same four guys packed their equipment and instruments, still with no roadies to be seen…
