Everybody has their own way of rewarding themselves—their own way of relaxing and getting the machine rebooted. Some drink, some eat; I use music, and whenever possible, live music. After last night’s in Duo concert at the “Old Lady” with guitar virtuosos Libor Šmoldas and Adam Doucha, I’ve had a total factory reset. It was so relaxing, skillful, and enjoyable that I can truly say: I got exactly what I came for!
I’ve told you before, but it bears repeating: one of the musical highlights of every month is the in Duo concert series. This is where Libor invites a friend or colleague to sit in for a session. Libor, being one of the top guitarists in Europe with a CV that commands respect anywhere, knows his “partners in crime.” You can always be sure the quality is guaranteed, and last night was no exception.
Libor is a major reason why I consider Prague the European capital of jazz; Adam Doucha is a major reason why Prague will remain the European capital of jazz. The sounds Adam coaxes from his six-string are clean, soft, and melodic. His improvisational skills are brilliant—he seldom loses his way; quite the opposite. He also possesses a healthy sense of self-criticism, something I’ve noted before, as this wasn’t my first time hearing him play.
However, all of that technical skill might lose its meaning if it weren’t for the most important part of his playing: his heart is in it. You don’t need to be a music expert to hear it. The way he disappears into his performance and lets the guitar do the talking is why you’ll be hearing much more about him in the future. Nice going, Adam!
I also want to give a big bonus to Libor for developing this in Duo concept. The way he adapts to his guests—whether they are young or old, experienced or fresh—and the way he creates space for his friends on stage is a respectful trait that isn’t always common. It’s exactly why these monthly sessions are worth the wait.
