The Restriction is in the Mind

Voice-Double Bass Octet @ Jazz Dock | 8.2.2026

I don’t find myself speechless very often—for better or worse😀—but after last night’s performance at Jazz Dock, I am truly at a loss for words. How does one describe the harmonic relationship between four kontrabassen and four human voices? It was a harmony so filled with joy and laughter, yet one that simultaneously harbored such dark, visceral undertones that my emotions were sent on a rollercoaster without a safety rail. You didn’t want it to stop; you simply developed a craving for more, and more, and…
That was the essence of the journey into the unknown provided by the Voice-Double Bass Octet: Ridina Ahmedová, Alice Bauer, Mirka Novak, and Markéta Zdeňková on vocals, with Petr Tichý, Ondřej Štajnochr, Ondřej Komárek, and Klára Pudláková on double bass.
Through original compositions, this unconventional lineup dared to shatter traditional musical boundaries and defy long-standing conventions. The result is nothing short of astonishing. The performance is so raw and evocative that every listener will experience it in a deeply personal way. In other words: this is something you must see and hear for yourself to grasp the full picture.
Just remember: the restrictions are in the mind. As the saying often attributed to Nietzsche goes, those who “could not hear the music” thought the dancers were insane.
Thank you, Voice-Double Bass Octet, for the experience. 🙏🙏
