The latest jazz discovery

Mikuláš Pokorný Trio @ U Malého Glena 27.3.2025

In the program advertising last night’s concert at U Malého Glena (Little Glen) it said, Mikuláš Pokorný Trio, Petr Dvorský – b; Ladislav Nič – dr; Mikuláš Pokorný – p. “Extraordinary pianist bringing his music based on the best what was created in jazz history. DO NOT MISS”, on the gig posters the same modest line continued 😀, “The latest jazz discovery“, and guess what, almost everything that was mentioned in the program and posters hold water. Almost, because Mikuláš can no longer be called the latest jazz discovery. With the skill and intensity he possesses when handling the keyboard this young man has already established himself at the top of the Czech music world, being a familiar sound both to fellow musicians as to us, the audience. What is maybe not so new but rare, is seeing Mikuláš as a band leader, a position not so easy to handle as one can quickly imagen, even if where only talking about three persons. Seeing the reaction from the listeners, myself included, this is definitely an area to develop more, especially when taking in account that he is also a good composer who doesn’t always need to lean on the old jazz standards. I talked about this with Mikuláš yesterday and this idea has been brewing for a long time with him, the problem is to find fellow musicians as devoted to it as himself. Understandable of course, when you start from the scratch, who’s gonna pay the rent?

No problems last night!

It might be hard to find devoted musicians for a long project, but that was not the case last night. The trio performing yesterday gave the impression of a regular group with a long history behind them, and yet this was the first time with this lineup. And of course the credit goes not only to Mikuláš, a trio is three! When you have Petr Dvorský on the bass you can basically forget that part, you know he will take care of it, and in a way that you wish he would always be there, and that was what Petr did. Just listening to his solos made it worthwhile to get to Little Glen last night. Okay, I’m aware that he’s been around, played with almost everybody in the republic, but that’s only because he’s good, just like he was yesterday. 😀
Last night a little bonus to me was Ladislav Nič on the drums, a youngster that with his very stylish way of letting the drums speak for himself gave a much more mature expression than what one could expect by just looking at him. I’m pretty sure we will hear a lot more of Ladislav and his drums in the future, because when you’re good enough you don’t need the extra show to cover anything up, and Ladislav is.
And Mikuláš Pokorný Trio? Well, it was already on the posters, right? “The latest jazz discovery” 😀
