The Joy of Music

Libor’s Jam Session @ U Staré paní 25.2.2026

The story continues. Last night, Libor’s jam session packed the house at U Staré paní once again. I could say “normal” session, but there is nothing ordinary about it. The music starting at 20:00 and running until closing time +, without a break, these nights are defined by the unexpected—featuring surprise performances that act as the true spice of life, and last night was no exception.

The foundation was, as always, built by our world-class Libor Šmoldas, who treated us to a rare appearance on bass guitar alongside his usual mastery of the six-string. Please remember, we shouldn’t take these sessions for granted; they require really hard work, and only Libor’s dedication to keeping the great Czech jazz tradition thriving makes them come true.

He was joined by Matej Štubniak on bass—a name you need to remember—and a new acquaintance for me, Petr Hošek, who held down the rhythm on the tubs. The line of drummers waiting to sit in was so long I only caught a snippet of Petr’s playing, but I certainly could have listened to some more!

As usual, since I’m writing a blog and not a novel, I will not review more individuals than the soundenginer and the bar staff who, inspite of the enormous workload, did a superb job! 😀🙏

With a mix of veterans and rising stars, these sessions are one reason why I call Prague the jazz center of Europe. A small tip: If you want a seat for the next session, I suggest making a reservation at The Old Lady. There’s no cover charge, so it fills up fast!
Keep an eye out for my monthly HotSpots at yhalinen.com, dropping later today or tomorrow, for the next jam session and more musical tips.
