Markéta Foukalová Folk Q @ Jazz Dock 12.1.2026
It’s the evening of the 12th of January, I’m in Jazz Dock waiting for a concert with Markéta Foukalová Folk Q, Markéta Foukalová – s; Jaromír Honzák – b; Marek Urbánek – dr; Mikuláš Pokorný – p, to start. Normally I would have at least a hint of what to expect, this time it was not possible. This is a new group/project and their first official performance. A band with a repertoire built on Czech traditional “campfire” songs, arranged to match 2026 and with lyrics that most of the population in this country know by heart. And what am I doing here? A good question, but this koncert came to me highly recommended from a source that I trust very much when it comes to the quality of musical happenings.
Okay, I admit, I’m not totally out on thin ice here, with Jaromír and Marek responsible for the rhythm section, a team that would easily qualify for almost any group in this country as well as outside the borders, you know that there’s a steady base to lean on. Mikuláš on the klavir is never wrong, he has already earned his spurs and is fulfilling the expectations laid on him. Markéta on the other hand was a new experience for me, ok I cheated and had a look on the world wide web to hear her clear, strong and pleasant voice, but live is alway live, so…
They stole two hours of my life!
It’s a brisk, flying start to the musical part of the evening. Markéta clearly knows her audience and how to get hold of it, and she does. Mikuláš and his piano takes us to spheres that I didn’t know he was capable of, and holding it all together a little in the background is Jaromír and Marek, who at regular intervals shows us how to build brilliant solos with their rhythmical tools. A few of the songs I recognise, most of them not, but the majority of the audience do, there are lighters coming up, there’s laughter, joy, and a few tears are shared to the memories of something a long time ago. The feedback from the audience is loud and deserved because in front of us is not only four skilled individuals but a band who is having fun, sharing with us something special, something unique. And here’s me, a Czech non-speaker wondering why the band stopped so early, before I realised that two hours had disappeared somewhere while the music got hold of me and the rest of the spectators. I’m not a fan of encores, never have been, but suddenly I find myself wishing like all of us, please one more more before we have to go… and our wishes come true!
Honor to whom honor is due
With the exception of a couple of originals made by Markéta and Mikuláš these were really old campfire tunes, cowboy songs that I would believe nobody likes to sit and listen to in Jazz Dock for two hours, so why was this so special? The arrangement of the songs, they are unusually skilled, there melodic, modern with a touch of jazz and classic, without getting too technically involved, they feel like originals themself and yet everybody recognizes them. I normally don’t get the spotlight on one person because this is a band performing, especially after last night but, the handwriting of these arrangements belongs to Mikuláš Pokorný, and even in the bible it’s mentioned; “honor to whom honor is due”.
Some inside information, this group just got out of the studio, a long play is to be expected next autumn, and as you probably understand, it’s something to wait for! Before that the next koncert with Markéta Foukalová Folk Q is on 27.1 in Klánovice – Beseda, for now this is all the information I got, so stay tuned to this website and I’ll give you more info as soon as I get some myself.
Thank You Markéta Foukalová Folk Q
