Libor's Jam Session @ U Staré paní | 21.5.2026
I will make a beautiful story short this time and ask you to head straight to the photo gallery instead. Why? Because not much has changed at one of the most popular musical events in the city of Prague—it is still absolutely thriving.
The club was filled with enthusiastic participants, covering everyone from rising stars to established pros. In fact, there were so many musicians wanting to give it a go that not everyone who wanted to play even got the chance to hit the stage! The music is consistently good, and sometimes you hear performances of surpassingly high quality. The atmosphere is exactly what you want from a jam session, including those fun, competitive moments where everybody wants to be on stage at the exact same time.
As usual, I will not single out any individual solo performance—none mentioned, none forgotten! The only exception is, of course, the incredible “house” band for the night: Libor Šmoldas (guitar), Ben Hague (drums), and Matouš Turner (double bass).
Since this is Libor’s Jam, I assume most of you already know our host. He is a world-class guitarist, perhaps even more highly appreciated outside of the country’s borders than at home. Ben, with his deep experience and sharp skills, can easily be called “Mr. Bebop” of the Czech jazz scene.
Standing alongside these two musical giants was young Matouš on the double bass, performing his very first “real” live gig. You would think he might have a severe case of the shakes, but absolutely not. He may have been a little nervous right at the beginning, but the way he handled his act deserves all the credit in the world. He has got serious talent. The longer the evening went on, the better he got as he realized we are all in the same boat. Put his name into your musical memory bank, because you will definitely hear more from Matouš in the future. Nice going!
Now, I will let the photos tell the rest of the story so you can get a full understanding of last night’s magic. See you next time!
