Libor Šmoldas Organ Trio @ U Staré Paní | 13.2.2026
Somebody pressed the sync button and the music-filled weekend got off to a flying start. As I mentioned in my “HotSpots for February,” it has been a long time since the Libor Šmoldas Organ Trio (Libor Šmoldas – g; Jakub Zomer – org; Martin Kopřiva – dr) and I were under the same roof. Last night at the “Old Lady,” I was reminded exactly why I follow this band.
There is no need to remind anyone of the skill this trio possesses—whether it’s Libor’s fluid melodic runs, Jakub’s soulful driving bass lines on the organ, or Martin’s impeccable timing keeping the engine room roaring. They are widely known even beyond the country’s borders, but while technical skill is important, yesterday we were given a lesson in what it’s really all about.
Through a three-set (?) performance of jazz standards and originals, they showed us what happens when you do something you truly love with people who are on your exact wavelength. They have reached that stage where there is no need for words—where communication is handled entirely through their instruments. When you find that level of connection with your colleagues, you have found something many strive for years to achieve but never do.
That is what it’s all about. We in the audience simply stayed put and inhaled every note; nobody left before the end! Thank you, Libor Šmoldas Organ Trio. See you next time!
