Hermon Mehari Quartet @ Atelier 57 | 29.3.2026
Based in Paris but rooted in the Kansas City scene, Mehari is a force. They say his music blends traditional jazz with modern textures and cultural influences. As the “man in the street,” I just call it a great sound. Melodic, soft, and gentle, yet filled with an intensity that seems impossible. It was magic through a trumpet, and he deserves every bit of international praise he’s received.
But this wasn’t just a soloist’s night; it was a powerhouse quartet. On piano, Rob Clearfield (a pillar of the Chicago scene, now active in France) showed incredible versatility, he’s known to blend jazz, classical, and gospel, last night that was just the starter. At one point, the well-deserved ovations for his playing felt like they might never end.
I’ll stick my neck out here: as great as the frontmen were, our local rhythm section—Tomáš Baroš on bass and Jesse Simpson on drums—is world-class. With a backbone like that, a soloist can truly fly. Their only worry is whether Tomáš and Jesse might steal the show! We even had a surprise appearance by a Welsh gift to tenor saxophonist, Osian Roberts, which speaks volumes about the quality of these sessions—musicians showing up just to hear other musicians play.
Another gorgeous Sunday in the books. I should be used to this high standard by now, but I’m still amazed.
Next up at A57: Ion Virlan Quintet on April 26th. Don’t miss it.
