Libor Šmoldas Organ Trio @ U Staré Paní, 25.4.2026
Surströmming, also known as “pungent fermented Baltic herring,” is exactly what it sounds like: a small fish that has been fermented in a tin to complete a process that adds a very… distinct smell before being served to innocent people. This is the ultimate Swedish contribution to black humor!
Last night at U Staré Paní, the Libor Šmoldas Organ Trio (Libor Šmoldas – guitar; Jakub Zomer – organ; Tomáš Hobzek – drums) showed us that even Surströmming can be enjoyed if it’s served the proper way. I am, of course, referring to Libor’s tune of the same name—a melodic, easy-going piece with bebop inspirations that was served to us at the end of the third set. It might be the only time in history that “Surströmming” and “Smile” (à la Sir Charlie Chaplin) could exist together in the same set! ![]()
The Jazzy Spring 2026 schedule this past Saturday delivered exactly what I promised: a city overflowing with high-class music and something for everyone. I found myself at “The Old Lady” to witness an intensive and skillful combination of guitar, organ, and drums that was the absolute peak of a perfect day.
Libor’s signature clean, warm tones—even at a high tempo—were exactly where they needed to be. Jakub brought his characteristically energetic approach to the Hammond, and with Tomáš Hobzek behind the kit providing that fluid rhythmic foundation, the package was perfect.
Once again, it was easy to walk home with a big smile on my face. To use a cliché: it looks so easy when you know exactly what you’re doing. Thank you for the music, Libor Šmoldas Organ Trio, and for showing us the only acceptable way to consume Surströmming! ![]()
