A Night to Remember @ JazzFestBrno,Tuesday, 7.4.2026
There are some concerts you simply don’t forget—no matter if you were on the stage or below it. Last night was one of those. A completely sold-out Cabaret des Péchés delivered exactly what the audience came for; you could see it on the happy faces everywhere. It was a knowledgeable crowd that listened to every detail, allowing the music space to unfold, yet broke into spontaneous applause to let the musicians know we weren’t just listening—we wanted more.
So, who am I referring to? If you’ve followed this blog from the start, you know I always focus on the local scene. Libor Šmoldas Quartet—featuring Mikuláš Pokorný (piano), Jesse Simpson (drums), and Tomáš Baroš (double bass)—delivered what must have been one of their best performances ever. Their approach was flawless, and I wasn’t alone in that feeling; the spectators followed every note with intense focus. The peak, of course, was the christening of their new record with Peter Bernstein as the godfather.
I’m not being paid to say this—yhalinen.com is strictly independent—but I will repeat myself: the record “Sorry, Miles!” is absolutely worth buying. While “live” is always special, this album captures those positive emotions and the soul of the quartet perfectly. Get it now; the first edition won’t last long!
And what about Goldings, Bernstein, and Stewart? I can’t ignore this supergroup without losing my credibility. With over 30 years of history, I doubt they are even capable of playing a “bad” gig. Their professional pride and respect for the audience wouldn’t allow it. In plain language: they showed us why they belong at the absolute top of the global jazz family. I won’t echo what’s been said before about their technical skills; just believe me when I say we got our money’s worth!
If for some strange reason you don’t believe me
, you have one more chance to see this fabulous organ trio tonight: Jazz Dock, Prague, at 21:00. As of right now, there are still standing tickets left—be fast!
One final comment: this was my first experience with JazzFestBrno. It was a pleasure—well-organized with excellent facilities, great artists. If this is their normal standard, you can be sure of one thing: I’ll be back!
