A Strong Debut!

Osmosis – Album Release @ Jazz Dock | March 22, 2026

As I mentioned recently, this Jazz Spring 2026 is so vibrant and all-encompassing that I don’t recall anything quite like it in the six and a half years I’ve spent in this European jazz capital. Osmosis, one of the most exciting newcomers on the Czech scene, is a perfect example of this energy. Despite being a relatively young quintet, they have already earned a very warm reception from the jazz community.

The band features František O. Kukula (drums), Robin Galia (piano/synth), Tomáš Liška (bass), František Vaníček (trumpet), and Petr Kalfus (sax). Their repertoire is built around original compositions by Kukula and Galia. While they are often labeled as “contemporary jazz,” I’ve always found it difficult to put labels on true artists. Osmosis proves why; yes, they are contemporary, but as this debut album shows, they are so much more.

A Brave Release

This debut feels like a brave release to me. The band performs without a safety net, staying entirely faithful to their unique style. After listening to the record a few times, my first impression was of an intriguing journey: it weaves sweet, soft melodic patterns with moments that touch the edge of classical jazz, all the way to experimental territory—sometimes all within the same track.

On the album cover, the band describes their sound as “moving on the border between jazz tradition and contemporary influences… naturally connecting acoustic and electronic instruments.” They draw from electronics, pop melodies, and even contemporary classical music to create a truly variable form.

A review is always in the “mind and ears” of the listener, so if this sounds even remotely interesting to you, I suggest heading to Jazz Dock this Sunday. The concert starts at 20:00. Since it’s an album launch, I suspect there might be a few surprises or extras in store—that’s just my guess, but a record always involves a wider community than just the band itself!

All in all, Osmosis has created something they can be truly proud of. Nice going!
