Brian Charette Trio feat. Max Light @ Ateliér 57 26.4.2025
I was just this close to getting trapped last night at Prague’s best jazz club, the one in Beroun. Just the environment, being at Jesse’s and Baras home with the unique atmosphere that you don’t really find anywhere else is something. And then the music, skilful world class musicians, top performances time after time and yesterday saw no exception to this formula when Brian Charette Trio, Brian Charette – org; Max Light – g; Jesse Simpson – dr; took over the stage.
Brian who is advertised as a world class Hammond B3 specialist showed us that everything we heard about him is actually true.
It was a lesson to learn for all of us on how to use the black and white. With a sensitive touch to his whole performance and yet being somewhat agitated at the same time, made his act more than personal. Brian got a couple of more gigs in Europe, look him up on the world wide web if you’re interested, he’s worth it.

And Max Light on the guitar, what a flawless inspiring approach to everything that came out of his fingers, solos, chord voicings, anything. And an absolutely brilliant way to adapt himself to his colleagues and make it sound like he never did anything else than play with these same guys. Keep the name in the memory box, because you will hear more about him, very much more in the future.
As I’m sure we will hear about Adam Doucha, a young Czech guitarist that joined the band for a while and showed his abilities, and they were more than good, he had absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, way to go!

And Jesse behind the drums. A person we all seem to forget because he is our local boy and host. But just as a reminder, Jesse is a brilliant drummer. Last night he showed us, again, why he is, for example, capable of leading the whole band from behind the battery, which takes a special skill itself. And the connection with Max was also something that stood out a bit, maybe not so exceptional since they go back in history, but very nice to listen to!

And the trap?
So where’s the trap? In the middle of Max’s guitar solo last night I suddenly realised that this is not self-evident, even though I came close to thinking so. I have come so used to the high class this event holds at Ateliér 57 that I almost take everything for granted, almost, and there’s the trap. This is not the Good Old Boys playing cowboy chords at your local, which has its place also, all credit to them. This is something totally different, that’s probably why it was “sold out” last night. People have come to be aware of all this, so if you want to avoid the trap and want to experience something unique and special I suggest you get yourself to A57 before they really start selling tickets in advance, which is not too far away. Next happening is 11th of May @ 17.00, two weeks from now and it’s an outdoor festival (reservations for the weather), see you there!
