The Sunshine of Our Love

The sunshades stayed folded yesterday during this season’s fourth edition of Jazz On The Roof at Jazz Dock. It was just as well, considering they wouldn’t have been of much use anyway. The only true sunspot on deck yesterday was right under the stage. I am, of course, referring to the Petra Vlková Quartet, and especially Petra herself, who served as yesterday afternoon’s ultimate bright spot. To once again quote Jazz Dock’s program leaflet, she is “a charismatic singer with a velvety voice and a passion for creative playfulness and uniqueness.” And indeed, she was exactly that.

With her naturally positive, radiant energy and a genuinely warm attitude toward both her music and her audience—qualities that have rightfully become her signature brand—she did more than just keep the crowd hooked for the entire set. She actively charmed passing strollers along the riverbank, drawing them up to the roof where they stayed until the final note. But above all, it is that “velvety” voice. She possesses a captivating tone that is incredibly difficult to put into words; she effortlessly wraps you around her finger, and you find yourself with absolutely no desire to escape.

Not alone...

In the spirit of truth, I must admit she had spectacular support from her stage colleagues, who represent the absolute elite of the Czech jazz scene. Guitarist Libor Šmoldas is already world-famous; his melodic solos, playful phrasing, and sneaky harmonic twists ensure he will remain a top-tier jazz star for a very long time to come. On double bass, the groove was expertly anchored by Petr Dvorský, whose flawless timing and deep tone provided the perfect foundation for the quartet.

Then there is Tomáš Zelený on the drum kit. Playing with a distinctively relaxed, laid-back style, he is absolutely a name to watch for the future. He is a textbook example of efficient mastery—making few unnecessary movements throughout the entire concert. And why should he? Every hit was exactly where it needed to be.

The story goes on. Spending a weekend afternoon with the Petra Vlková Quartet, listening to “old” jazz standards reimagined with their special, playful twist, was the perfect way to kick off the weekend. Thank you, guys—I’ll be back the next time you take the stage! 🙏🙏😀
