Three of Seven @ Jazz Dock 4.8.2025
I had a fairly clear scheme on how to picture last night’s gig at Jazz Dock for this blog where the love for music was the connecting factor between the continents, Europe, Australia and North America. After all, I’ve seen these guys before, and the last time was not even too long ago, I have their record (which you should also get! link below), I know they’re good, they have a joyable and very skillful approach to what they do, and yet they surprised me, and not only me, so much for my scheme! I’m of course referring to Three of Seven, Libor Šmoldas – g; Sam Zerna – b; Jesse Simpson – dr. And the surprise? It started with the first chord of the first song for the night, Streets of Laredo, it also got the audience in Jazz Dock totally quiet. Libor’s guitar, which was magic last night, was like a light switch, everybody’s attention was suddenly on the stage, no more eating, talking, drinking! This would be the tune for the rest of the night. I have no idea what made this, a receptive audience that made the band excel themselves or a band that excelled themselves and got the audience receptive or maybe all together. To be honest, I don’t care, I was just happy being at the right place at the right time!
And of course Libor and his guitar was not alone, Sam dancing, loving, making his magic with the bass, Jesse disappearing somewhere, like he does when he is at his best, and letting the drums do the talking, a textbook of solos and improvisation and yet the bands togetherness was what made us all fall in love with the three continents last night. With a set list that contained standards, a couple of requests from the audience and thankfully quite a few of all the band members’ own compositions this was just, just… perfect!

You still have the chance...
This was the second gig of the band’s mini European tour, so if you missed last night, you still have the chance, and as you can understand I suggest you take it! Remember that Sam doesn’t live in this part of the world and will be going home at some point, so this is a really rare delicacy on offer. Below with the download for the band’s record you’ll find a link to my August Hotspots where you can check out the next gig for the Three of Seven, it also includes a little inside information concerning next Saturday, you found it here 😂. Remember to check it out, especially if you made plans to attend some of the concerts since there have been some changes to the tour list.
The record: A live recording to be found at Bandcamp, seven tunes where six of them are made by the individuals of the trio and one is an Irish tradition arranged by Libor. You’ll find it here: Three of Seven At Atelier 57
